Mindful...

... when collecting mushrooms

Our forests are rich in valuable mushrooms, and collecting them is a popular leisure activity in South Tyrol. To maintain the balance of this sensitive ecosystem, a mindful approach to mushroom foraging is essential.

Mushroom collection in South Tyrol is regulated by provincial law and subject to the following rules:

  • Mushrooms may only be collected on even-numbered days between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
  • Residents of the municipality may collect up to 2 kg of mushrooms per person per day.
  • Non-residents may collect up to 1 kg of mushrooms per person per day.
  • Mushrooms must be roughly cleaned at the collection site and transported in a solid, open, and well-ventilated container.
  • The use of rakes and hoes is prohibited.

Non-residents must pay a collection fee of €10 per person per day. To pay the fee via post or bank please contact the municipality in which you plan to collect mushrooms. Residents only need to carry a valid ID.

Currently, mushroom collection is prohibited in the following four municipalities: Karneid, Tiers, and Welschnofen, as well as in the Kohlern area of the municipality of Bolzano.

MUSHROOM INSPECTION

Only collect and eat mushrooms you can clearly identify! When in doubt, it’s better to leave the mushroom. Experts, nature guides, or - by appointment only- the mycological inspection services of the South Tyrolean Health Authority can assist with safe identification.
