For discoverers
Frangart | Eppan
…below the imposing Sigmundskron Castle invites you to experience Eppan and the whole of South Tyrol without limits.
Situated at the foot of Sigmundskron Castle and the Girlan vineyards, Frangart | Eppan enjoys particularly good accessibility. Because it is located on the valley floor, Frangart is an excellent starting point for cycling tours or long walks through the natural and cultural landscape between Lake Kaltern in the south and the snow-capped peaks of the Dolomites in the north. Thanks to the proximity to Bolzano, the Etschtal cycle path, the Montiggl lakes and the Messner Mountain Museum Firmian in Sigmundskron Castle, guests in Frangart | Eppan have a lot to offer.
Sport and culture are balanced, and those who feel like shopping can take advantage of the excellent public transport connections and reach the centre of Bolzano and the surrounding wine villages of Eppan in just a few minutes.
There are also some historical treasures and buildings to discover, such as the neo-Gothic style parish church dedicated to St. Joseph. On its east façade is a mosaic of Our Lady dating from 1903. Another example of preserved architecture from the past is the 15th century Ansitz Pillhof. Once a stately farmhouse, it was renovated in 2003 with much respect for the old walls and the earlier architectural style. Today it houses a vinotheque.
A large stainless steel sphere, which has become a symbol of the village, towers unmistakably over Frangart | Eppan. When driving into the Überetsch region, it immediately catches the eye on the wooded hill near Ansitz Hochfrangart. This sphere is one of the numerous works of art by the late artist Karl Nicolussi Leck and is one of the highlights of his art park, as is a giant dragon whose four-metre-long tongue arches over the road. For a visit to the same, you are welcome to contact the Eppan tourist office (0471 66 22 06).
On a rocky hill in the direction of Bolzano, the impressive Sigmundskron Castle catches the eye directly. Since 2006 it has been the headquarters of the five Messner Mountain Museums of the extreme mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner. On a tour, pictures, sculptures, symbolic objects and relics tell of the importance of the mountains for people.
