Dive into the past
Berg | Eppan
Historic vineyard terrace of Eppan
The numerous residences in the district of Berg | Eppan rise proudly, and even today the spirit and charm of bygone times can be felt in its sweeping hillsides and narrow streets. Also known as a centre of nobility, Berg probably has the greatest density of manor houses and castles that tell of the past.
Moos-Schulthaus Castle in particular is exemplary of the everyday culture of past centuries, as the complex offers an authentic insight into late-medieval living culture like hardly any other castle. It also houses a small folklore museum, which is well worth seeing, with various tools from earlier days and a Gothic parlour. In addition to the residential and farm buildings, you can also visit St. Catherine's Church just below the manor house. A visit to the castle can be perfectly combined with a short hike.
The high-medieval castle complex of Schloss Freudenstein, which is clearly visible from afar, also combines historical and cultural flair with an innovative sports experience. The castle has a golf training centre with state-of-the-art training facilities for beginners and professionals. Also part of the castle is a picturesque medieval gatehouse with two holiday flats, which has been largely preserved in its Gothic style.
The slopes of the fraction Berg are made for producing excellent wine thanks to the easily heated, chalky soil. Falling winds coming from the Mendelberg ensure good aeration of the grapes, making them less susceptible to disease. These are optimal conditions for a high-yield grape harvest. Especially Pinot Blanc, one of the flagships of the Eppan wine landscape, thrives magnificently in these sites.
